BOOK CUPBOARD LOST, BUSCO BOOKS FOUND NEW PREMISES HAVE BEEN FOUND to house the growing stock of used and new books formerly available in The Book Cupboard. As of 2 December 2009, a new chapter in the history of bookselling opens. Contracts have been signed and exchanged on much bigger premises, situated on the corner of Carrer del Sol and Carrer Sènia del Barral (see map below for location). THE BOOK CUPBOARD may have closed for the last time, 15 years after it was first conceived, but BUSCO BOOKS will pick up where it left off and offer a bigger and better service. The new name of BUSCO BOOKS will reflect the growing range of Spanish and other nationality books kept in stock, giving it a more international flavour. With a floor space of three times that of The Book Cupboard, Busco Books will take some time to get in order, so please keep informed of when the shop will open here or by email. The name of BUSCO BOOKS will also be phased in online as well as on the streets of Lloret de Mar. Both the BookCupboard.com and Searchingforabook.com names will be replaced by the one name: BuscoBooks.com. MEANWHILE trade continues via the internet and by other means. SUNDAY MARKET - 13 December 2009! |
What
visitors say of
"The little bit of Lloret we always enjoy visiting." - J. & S. G., Coventry Books I just read PAULO COELHO, The Alchemist. I read this to see why it is so popular. and found it something of an anti-climax, having read other books of the same kind over the years. Still, a very short, simple and feel-good fable. Perhaps a good read for the less well-read or anyone in search of inspiration, I am sure. It left me tempted to try another of his books, perhaps written later on as opposed to his earlier books. F. YOUNGHUSBAND, Everest The Challenge (1936). I was intrigued to read this by the Brit who forcefully broke Tibet c.1905. No mention of that, but a short history of the attempts on Everest to date; some other Himalyan efforts; a welcome applause for the porters; hopes for future efforts on Everest; & oddly, a spiritual view to close. Evidently a reformed character with a wealth of experience in the region. STARKS & MURCUTT - LOST IN TIBET. A true story of 5 US airmen crash-landing in the Tibetan mountains in 1943. Having read a number of other "foreigners in Tibet" stories, this was disappointing: it had promise but was a little dull; an irritating narrative style along with its very American view of Tibet. If looking for a story of Tibet, readers would do better to read Heinrich Harrer or Robert Ford. NICHOLAS HAGGER - RISE & FALL OF CIVILIZATIONS. Study of history & predictions with a unique slant. NH says the Light (religious experience) is the common cause for birth of civilizations & the strength of Light directly relates to the strength of civilizations. Europe Xtian, Islamic, Byzantine Xtian, Buddhism, Hinduism etc are all waning with US Xtian the only one in ascent. US-led superstates may save us all from collapse. Interesting. NICK DANZIGER - DANZIGER'S TRAVELS. One man's silk-road journey from UK to Shanghai via Europe, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Tibet in 1980's on 1000 quid, using public transport & blagging, with barely a legal visa in sight. Very frank observations, great friends made, humour & humility - a fascinating insight (if nothing else) into how miserable the British are by comparison! We listen to Planet Rock online R.I.P. |

If you're looking for a secondhand bookshop on the Costa Brava, looking for an English bookshop close to Barcelona or Girona, or just looking for English books in Spain, then you've come to the right place. The Book Cupboard, Lloret de Mar, is on the coast midway between Barcelona and the French border; the only secondhand English bookshop for something like 50km or more. The majority of books on our shelves are used and in the English language. We also stock a good range of low-price new English books. Being in the heart of Catalunya (Catalonia) on the Costa Brava, which is one of Spain's major tourist destinations, we also stock of good range of Spanish-language secondhand books. A small selection of Catalan, German, Dutch, French and Russian books help to give the shop a truly international flavour. Aside from the books on our shelves, we offer a search service for anything out of stock or hard to find. The Book Cupboard is therefore the one-stop shop for used books of all sorts and probably the only shop in a wide line between Barcelona and Paris which can say that. Proprietor, Kevin Allcoat was recently featured in the Costa Brava Resident magazine. If you missed it, please click here.

IMPORTANT: HOLIDAYS / CLOSURES Car parking is free on the streets during fiestas (Sundays included). Out of season (September-Easter), most car parks in and around the town are also free.
Lloret de Mar is located in a natural sun trap on the Costa Brava. The town is just an hour's drive from Barcelona (two hours by train) and a 45-minute drive from Girona. With Girona Airport only half an hour from Lloret, it is conceivably quicker and cheaper to hop on a plane from airports like Stansted, visit the Book Cupboard, stock up on other low-tax essentials and get home in the time it takes to go shopping in London for the day! La Diada de St Jordi (St George's Day) is the 23rd April. Not only is St Jordi the patron saint of England (and other countries), he is also the patron saint of Catalunya. As the date on which both William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes (England and Spain's greatest writers) were said to have died, it is the perfect date on which to celebrate reading and the gifting of books. It was thus introduced to the world as World Book Day in the 1980's thanks to the people of Catalunya. It is now onw of the region's major festivals and perhaps the biggest day of the year for many booksellers. The Book Cupboard has been involved since 2003 (see photo, left, from 2009). |

Mad about Madeleine? Madeleine Carroll, (born 1906), was one of Hollywood's first "cool British blondes". During her life, Ms Carroll spent some time on the Costa Brava (see magazine feature) and after her death her remains were interred at Calonge, Catalunya. Now, 20 years on, The Book Cupboard, Lloret de Mar, has acquired her personal book collection and you can now get a little of it from this website. Follow the link via our Miscellaneous items section Many of the books in this collection were signed either by the actress herself or were presented to her by the author. Inscriptions from Michael Bentine and Robert Ruark are among the gems for sale. |
